Justin Harrison, PhD
College of Liberal Arts
Dr. Justin Harrison of La Jolla, CA is an Assistant Professor specializing in Philosophy and is the Chair of the Liberal Arts and Philosophy programs at Ashford University. He received his BA in Biology from Taylor University in Upland, IN, but decided to pursue a Master’s in Philosophy instead of a career in medicine after falling in love with philosophy while studying abroad in Lithuania. He then completed the MA program in Philosophy at the University of Toledo, OH before earning his PhD at Loyola University Chicago, where he focused on 20th century French and German philosophy, specifically phenomenology and radical empiricism, and also worked as an adjunct professor at Loyola, Harold Washington College (a Chicago City College), and Harper College (a suburban community college). At the same time he worked in the philosophy programs for two online universities. In 2011, he and his wife moved to San Diego to begin working at Ashford University. “I love teaching at Ashford because of our student body, which is rich with personal and professional experience that is often missing at places with younger student populations. The stories that I see relayed in papers and discussion boards are so moving and meaningful.” Dr. Harrison likes to remind his students that the smartest students are not always the best students. “Just like with most things in life, education takes a lot of work, and the more you are willing to put in the work, the greater the reward.”
