College of Education

Dr. Julie Adkins is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at Ashford University. She earned her PhD in Education with an emphasis in Professional Studies from Capella University, an MT in Early Childhood/Elementary Education at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a BA in Economics at the College of William and Mary. After working as a financial analyst for two years, she began her career in education in 2004 when she served as an elementary school teacher before serving as the school’s mathematics coach assisting teachers from K-5 in implementing best practices for elementary mathematics. In 2011, she left the world of elementary education and began to pursue a career in higher education in hopes of sharing her expertise with teachers. She has presented at several local math conferences offering ideas for best practices, and currently serves as a peer reviewer for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and as a faculty supervisor for student teachers during their clinical experience. Her favorite thing about teaching is the dialogue that occurs within the discussion forum and the sharing of ideas. “What I love about Ashford University is that the students come from all walks of life that include a multitude of experiences, which only opens our minds to new perspectives. As an educator, I am a firm believer that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ mentality to learning and that all students can succeed when their intellectual strengths are embraced and recognized as part of the learning process.” Dr. Adkins lives in Richmond, VA, is married to an avid runner, and has a daughter and a son that like to keep her on her toes at all times.
