Dr. Melissa Phillips is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at Ashford University. She earned her undergraduate degree in English and secondary education from Towson University, duel Master’s degrees in Special Education and Teacher Leadership from The College of Notre Dame of Maryland, and her Doctorate degree in Special Education from Walden University. Dr. Phillips was raised in Baltimore, MD, where she taught public and non-public (federally funded) school for children with various disabilities who had behavior related disorders including autism, specific learning disabilities, and emotional/behavior disabilities. As her career progressed, she began teaching adjunct and joined the staff of Ashford University. Her favorite aspect of teaching is “providing new and future teachers with teaching and positive behavior support strategies to put in their teaching toolbox.” She tries to infuse humor into her teaching whenever possible. “It is important for new and future teachers to realize the value of laughter, especially while trying to diffuse a difficult situation.” Dr. Phillips currently lives in San Diego, CA.
