Karen M. Bakuzonis, PhD
College of Health, Human Services, and Science
Dr. Bakuzonis is Chair of the Bachelor of Arts in Health Informatics program at Ashford University. She earned her PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Florida. She also holds a Master of Science in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia/ Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her undergraduate work at Daemen College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Records Administration. Professionally, Dr. Bakuzonis’ career has included such roles as Department Director, consultant for long-term care and ambulatory care, administrator, faculty member, and Co-Director of an External Quality Review Organization. As a member of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education accreditation panel, she must maintain her knowledge of accrediting standards. She loves analyzing data, curriculum development, and preparation for accreditation. For all her students, Dr. Bakuzonis strives to be memorable so that they will use what they’ve learned when tackling problems in their new profession. She says she likes this quotation from Robert Frost: “I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” Dr. Bakuzonis lives in Gainesville, FL. She has two sons, three dogs, and loves to cook, bake, and garden.
