Dr. Valencia Coty-Barker is an Assistant Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Ashford University. She holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Argosy University, a Master’s degree in Science Education from Georgia State University, a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Tennessee State University, and a certification in Clinical Laboratory Sciences/Medical Technology from GSU. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the National Science Teachers Association, and the North American Association for Environmental Education. Dr. Coty-Barker has multidisciplinary experience in the fields of clinical and forensic toxicology as well as science education. She was drawn to the field of environmental studies after several years of teaching environmental science in at-risk urban secondary settings and realizing there was little research on how this particular segment of the population and their communities viewed environmental issues and solutions. Her area of research focuses specifically on urban youth and the environment. Current projects are aimed at increasing engagement levels of urban community members in environmental action projects. Dr. Coty-Barker joined Ashford in 2007 and says she was “immediately impressed by their focus on providing a high quality but nurturing and supportive academic experience for all students .” She encourages her students to embrace academic challenges and to view learning as a lifelong process. When not spending time with her husband and two daughters, Dr. Coty-Barker can be found enjoying Zumba, urban hiking, traveling, reading, and listening to world music.
