Dr. Lisa Marie Johnson chairs the Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning with Technology program at Ashford University. She has been involved in distance learning initiatives at the higher education level in a variety of roles since the 1990s. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology (BA) from Florida State University and a Master’s degree in Education (MEd) from Georgia State University, she spent several years teaching, designing, and developing online learning programs for higher education audiences in the United States, and then achieved her Doctorate of Philosophy in Education (PhD) with an emphasis in Instructional Design and Online Learning from Capella University. She has taught and designed for fully online delivery since 2002. “I enjoy the dynamic landscape of online higher education, and I embrace my responsibility to guide learners toward mastery of knowledge and skills and to instill a passion for lifelong learning.” Dr. Johnson believes that digital and information fluency as well as being savvy with technologies for the web are essential skills needed to thrive personally and professionally in our ever increasingly connected world. She encourages online learners to persist in their goals, and “remember that formal learning is never as much about intellect or ability as it is about one’s willingness to commit to the joys, burdens, and sacrifices of the learning process.” Dr. Johnson’s primary research interests include adult learning theory and methods with technology, the culture of academic integrity, the culture and community of online learning, universal design for online learning, models and methods for the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of effective online learning, as well as organizational anthropology and pattern analysis.
