Virginia Loh-Hagan

College of Education

Ashford University faculty member Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan is also a multi-published author, former faculty member at San Diego State University and University of San Diego, and former K-8 school teacher. At Ashford, she is chair of the Library Science, Reading Literacy, and Education Studies programs.

Dr. Loh-Hagan has a BA in English Language and Literature and a Master’s in Elementary Education (K-8) and Special Education specializing in Learning Disabilities (K-12) from the University of Virginia. Upon graduation, she received the "Outstanding Woman Scholar in Education" award.

She earned her Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Literacy from SDSU-USD in May 2008. Her dissertation for which she received a Beiter Research Award from ChLA examined the cultural authenticity of Asian-American children’s literature. She has a chapter book with Candlewick Press, a picture book with Sleeping Bear Press, and several academic publications about children and young adult literature with Guilford Press, ALAN Review, and Pearson Education. She presents at conferences, professional development trainings, author visits, etc.

Dr. Loh-Hagan is an active member of several professional organizations including American Library Association (ALA), Children’s Literature Association (ChLA), and International Reading Assocation (IRA). In addition, she is actively involved with the community, serving on several local Boards. She is on her city’s Library Board of Trustees, Feaster Charter School Board, and also served on the Literature List Update committee for the California Department of Education. She currently lives in San Diego County with her husband.
