Theology Student and Social Justice Advocate
"I feel more connected to this school having never set foot on campus than I ever did at my community college in town!”
Kristina Heise, 26, currently lives in Chicago and attends the Lutheran School of Theology. She didn’t always know that pursuing theology was in her future, as she was initially interested in becoming a librarian and felt that a degree in Social Science would be imperative to helping her achieve her goal. However, when she started working for Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Kristina realized she could still apply her Ashford degree, but toward a different calling.
“I hope to be a pastor for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America,” shares Kristina. “Having a social science degree has proved very beneficial, and continues to be an asset as I move forward in my work with promoting social justice efforts from a theological standpoint.”
Kristina also has a deep interest in serving people who live with chronic conditions, as she herself does, and has periodically served as a co-facilitator of the Lupus Foundation of America Greater Cleveland Chapter. In 1999, Kristina was diagnosed with this disease, which intervened with her completion of a social science degree from Cleveland State University.
“I needed to find a school that could provide me with flexibility with my health, and Ashford’s online program and staff went above and beyond working with my limitations,” says Kristina. “I was able to accomplish in two years what I had been trying to do for eight on a traditional college campus – obtain my undergraduate degree.”
Today, Kristina is confident that enrolling in Ashford University was the best decision she’s ever made in regards to her education. She would encourage prospective students to talk with counselors, who she believes are honest about what the programs have to offer and are supportive of their students’ decisions.
As an alumnus, Kristina believes her life has been changed since she enrolled in Ashford, and she continues to feel close to the University. “Ashford is a great school for people looking for an affordable and accredited online education program. I still feel supported by Ashford, even as a graduate. I feel more connected to this school having never set foot on campus than I ever did at my community college in town!”
