Master of Business Administration, Business Economics specialization, 2011
Investment Market Research Analyst
"I truly learned so much valuable information that I apply to my career."
“Education has always been important to me, and getting my MBA has been a goal since my undergraduate days,” says Victoria Baird, 30, of San Diego, CA. “I wanted to be able to learn more and advance in my current career.” Upon graduating from Ashford University with her Master of Business Administration, Business Economics specialization on October 31, 2011, that’s exactly what happened – Victoria was promptly promoted to Market Research Analyst at the firm where she has worked for the past three years, Brandes Investment Partners. In her new position, Victoria monitors global financial markets, analyzes economic trends and market conditions, and conducts ongoing research projects.
Victoria was born and raised in New York State. After earning her Bachelor’s degree at a college in nearby Connecticut, she moved to New York City and worked in investments for five years before relocating to San Diego to begin working at Brandes. Though already gaining success and experience in her 20s, she knew that a lack of a Master’s degree might one day hold her back from advancing further in her career – but attending traditional classes with her work schedule wasn’t an option. Luckily, as Victoria explains, “Ashford’s program allowed me to earn my MBA and still maintain my career.”
Of course, going to school and working full-time is a challenge for most, and Victoria admits she was no exception. “But I found that with good time management, it was possible. Yes, having to sacrifice weekends and social events was sometimes frustrating! But in the end, it was all worth it. You can learn a lot and still have time for work and life. It is a great way to earn a degree for working professionals.”
Victoria appreciates the knowledge and experiences that she gained from Ashford just as much as she values having the degree. “I truly learned so much valuable information that I apply to my career. I was amazed by the quality of the faculty members and the work experience of my professors – I gained lots of insight from them, and the interaction in each class was so interesting. Plus, my classmates all had versatile backgrounds and we learned a lot from each other.”
Perhaps not surprisingly, Victoria isn’t ready to stop learning just yet. She plans to continue to advance in her career by working toward obtaining a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. “Reaching goals is something I take very seriously,” she shares. “I want to be an example that hard work pays off and that college is essential in developing a successful career.”
To those considering enrolling at Ashford, Victoria advises: “Give it your all, because you get out of it what you put in. I made sure my work was the best I could do, and worked diligently at maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout the program. It was hard work, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I enjoyed every minute, and am looking forward to the success that will continue to come from having an MBA!”
