Stephen Brewer, PsyD

Dr. Stephen Brewer is an Assistant Professor in the College of Health, Human Services, and Sciences at Ashford University, where he teaches courses in psychology. He holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology as well as an MA in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Diego, CA and a BS in Psychology from University of California, San Diego. He has over seven years of clinical experience working with people who have addictions, mood disorders, and chronic minority stress. His research focuses on psychologist and counselor competence in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, couples, and families. Among other training experiences, he completed a practicum at the Salvation Army Adult Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in San Diego, was a Psychological Intern at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, and is currently finishing a post-doctoral internship as a psychological assistant at a private practice in Scripps Ranch, CA
. Dr. Brewer was an associate faculty member at Ashford for two and a half years while finishing his doctorate and, after graduating, decided to teach full time. “I was drawn to Ashford University because of its commitment to providing high quality, affordable education to people who might otherwise not have access to such an education.” To students, he advises, “Remember that your professor is a geek in their area of study! We love hearing about new ideas and developments in our area of expertise, so engaging a professor’s inner nerd is one of the easiest ways to get a professor to notice and remember you favorably.” Dr. Brewer is a Doctor Who fanatic and a foodie who appreciates the flourishing microbrewery community in San Diego, CA, where he lives.
