Mauvalyn Bowen, PhDForbes School of Business
Dr. Mauvalyn Bowen is an Assistant Professor in the Forbes School of Business at Ashford University. She received a PhD in Work and Human Resource Education with a minor in Business Administration and research emphasis in Entrepreneurship from the University of Minnesota. She holds a Master’s degree in Workforce Education and Development from the Southern Illinois University and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Education from the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech). She also earned a postgraduate diploma in General Management from the University of the West Indies, Mona and a graduate certificate in Technology Commercialization from the University of Calgary, Canada.
Dr. Bowen has over two decades of international and intercultural work experience in higher education, both online and in residence, primarily in the Caribbean and North America. She was instrumental in the leadership and development of the first BSc Degree Program in Entrepreneurship at UTech, which subsequently led to the creation of the Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership. She then served as the first head of the school (the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean). In that capacity, she provided oversight to a Business Incubator, a Business Services Unit, and a Business Clinic, hired top class faculty, and influenced students’ recruitment. As a Fulbright Fellow, Dr. Bowen is a member of several professional organizations including but not limited to: the Institute for Small Business & Entrepreneurship, United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Academy of Management, Academy of Human Resource Management, and the Project Management Institute. She is also the Convener of the Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Entrepreneurship Curriculum Development Team and Reviewer for two major International Entrepreneurship Journals and several conferences.
Dr. Bowen has a passion for and commitment to mission and service. She says, “I have a feeling of accomplishment when I know that my teaching has made a positive influence on a learner’s future professional practice. I am excited about serving the College of Business and Professional Studies through continued demonstration of commitment to the vision and values of the university, collaborative results, creative curriculum development, teaching excellence, student-centered advisement and conducting peer reviews.” Dr. Bowen is a Jamaican national currently residing in Plymouth, MN with her husband, Garfield and their son, Jovaughn.
