Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management, 2011
"I have proven to my three kids that anything is possible once you truly try."
Elizabeth Lopez, 32, has been a member of the United States Army for thirteen years. She currently lives in Honolulu, Hawaii with her husband and three children. In April 2011, Elizabeth graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management from Ashford University. “My intentions are to become an officer in the Army,” Elizabeth explains, “but I decided to pursue my degree more for my children. I want them to realize the importance of an education.”
Being a wife, a parent, and a Soldier requires a very difficult balance, but Elizabeth says Ashford’s “flexibility and caring attitudes” make it all possible. “I had attended another university’s online program prior to Ashford, and they were not as cooperative or understanding when it came to military issues. At Ashford, the professors truly cared about what was going on in my life, and my Student Advisor was amazing. I have also enjoyed the fact that Ashford students are very mature. Everyone takes their classes seriously.”
When she completed her program, Elizabeth decided it was well worth traveling to Clinton, Iowa for the commencement. “Graduation was an amazing experience. I waited so long for that day, and it was very fulfilling to walk across the stage.” Her next step is to apply for Officer Candidate School.
Elizabeth says being an Ashford graduate has had a profound impact on her life. “I am more confident about the decisions I make and the expectations I set for my children and myself. I have proven to my three kids that anything is possible once you truly try.”
Her children are certainly getting a full example of the value of an education, and not just by watching mom - dad is also a student at Ashford University! Elizabeth explains that her husband opted to pursue his degree after watching her success. “I have already inspired one of the most important people in my life,” says Elizabeth. “Ashford is one of the best decisions I ever made!”
