Holly Wilson, PhD

College of Education

Dr. Holly Wilson is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at Ashford University. She earned a PhD in Educational Linguistics from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Arts in Linguistics with specializations in Spanish Linguistics and Teacher’s of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of New Mexico, and Bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and Linguistics from the University of New Mexico. Dr. Wilson discovered TESOL as a profession when she worked as a writing tutor in the University of New Mexico Writing Center during her undergrad years. Because her major was Linguistics, she was assigned all the international students. Through this experience, she realized she loved working with foreign students and that she could apply her knowledge of linguistics to helping them improve their English. Before working with Ashford, she worked as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor and adjunct professor for 18 years at universities, community colleges and language schools in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area. She also has 16 years’ experience as a TESOL educator, two years at the University of New Mexico in a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate program, and 14 years in the Master’s and Doctorate degree TESOL programs at Alliant International University in San Diego, California. She says, “My favorite thing about teaching educators is seeing them develop their understanding of theoretical and pedagogical concepts and how to apply them to the classroom. I feel especially fulfilled when a student of mine tells me that they tried something they learned from me in their classroom and it was a success.” Dr. Wilson lives in Los Lunas, NM, about 20 miles south of Albuquerque in the Rio Grande Valley.
