Biography"Online teaching and learning works because technology has evolved to meet the needs of a wide range of learners on an international scale."
Dr. Andrew L. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Ashford University. He received his PhD in English from the University of Missouri, his Master’s degree in English from West Chester University, and his Bachelor’s degree in English from Virginia Tech. He has taught full time since 1997 and has instructed courses and workshops in advanced poetry, world literature, British literature, American literature, business writing, journalism, and freshman composition. Dr. Smith came on as a faculty member at Ashford in 2013. Whenever possible, he runs his courses in a seminar format in which students share in the responsibilities of teaching and learning through presentations and class discussions. He believes this is the best way for students to learn deeply and retain their knowledge in lasting memory. He says, “I am particularly enthusiastic about working with Ashford University online students because I have a heart for non-traditional populations who frequently juggle school with employment, family obligations, military service, and health issues. Online teaching and learning works because technology has evolved to meet the needs of a wide range of learners on an international scale. Ashford University is perfect for students and faculty who appreciate full academic engagement on a flexible schedule.” Dr. Smith lives on a 237-acre farm with his wife and daughter, as well as 25 chickens, 2 cats, and approximately 30,000 honeybees. When the family has free time, they love traveling to Dana Point, CA, where Dr. Smith first learned to surf.
