James Murphy-Aguilu, JDCollege of Liberal Arts
James Murphy-Aguilu is an Assistant Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Ashford University. He received his Juris Doctor from University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School, where he was a Wisconsin Idea Merit Scholar. He earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Behavioral Science & Law and Communications with a Minor in Women’s Studies from UW- Madison as well. Murphy-Aguilu worked as a criminal prosecutor for the Cook County State’s Attorney's office in Chicago, IL where he prosecuted several high profile narcotics and gang cases. In 2012 he changed gears to defend Cook County against torts and civil rights actions, specializing in prisoner litigation. Murphy-Aguilu has been instructing full time with Ashford since early 2013 and teaches courses in criminal and social justice. He says, “Ashford University provides accessible and top quality education by pairing practitioners in the field with well-structured and designed classes.” Murphy-Aguilu lives in Chicago with his wife Melissa and their daughter, Alessandra.
