Baseball Downed on the Road at Viterbo

April 13, 2009 – Ashford University’s baseball team fell in a pair of road conference games at the expense of Viterbo University in a Monday doubleheader, 6-5 and 12-2, in La Crosse, Wis. The Saints fell to 8-22 on the year, 3-13 in Midwest Collegiate Conference games.

Sophomore Anthony Misitano and senior Jake Steve drove in two runs apiece to lead the Saints in game one.

Ashford was able to get on the board early thanks to Steve’s run-scoring double that drove home Misitano in the top of the first inning.

The Saints tacked on three more runs in the top of the third inning for a four-run advantage, but the V-Hawks charged back with six unanswered runs.

A seventh-inning Ashford rally was cut short despite an RBI single by Misitano that cut the deficit to one.

Sophomore starter Billy Becker was charged with all six runs on nine hits in the loss. Sophomore Hunter Allspaugh struck out two in a scoreless sixth inning of relief.

Ashford was limited to five hits in game two as Viterbo roughed up AU starter J.D. Fabian in 2 2/3 innings for 12 runs on 10 hits.

The Saints capitalized again in the top of the first inning as Steve and senior Tyler Sukut executed a double-steal attempt for a 1-0 lead, but Ashford was held off the scoreboard for three consecutive innings.

Sukut homered later in the fifth inning, a solo shot, but it would be too little, too late, as the game concluded after the V-Hawks’ 10-run lead held up through five innings.

Ashford and Viterbo square off again tomorrow at 3 p.m.
