Bauer, Cummings March Athletes of the Month

April 10, 2009 – Respective third basemen from Ashford University’s baseball and softball teams, senior Brian Cummings of Clinton, Iowa, and junior Whitney Bauer of DeWitt, Iowa, were honored as Male and Female Athletes of the Month, the Saints’ athletic department announced earlier this week.

Cummings hit three home runs and four doubles in the month of March, recording a base hit in all eight games played. He hit a solo home run in an effort against Iowa Wesleyan College (March 21) before going yard in back-to-back games against Robert Morris College in Ashford’s first contests of the season at Alliant Energy Field.

For the season, Cummings is hitting .413 in 80 at-bats through 25 games. He ranks second in the Midwest Collegiate Conference in batting average and trails Grand View University’s Chris Cutler by .003 to become the league leader.

The Clinton native extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in his first at-bat before leaving Wednesday’s game after being hit by a pitch.

Bauer was a bright spot in second-year Head Coach Kyle Yore’s offense, recording 12 hits in 14 games in March.

She drove in a season-best four runs against Trinity Christian College (March 25) and showed discipline at the plate by drawing five walks.

In addition to three doubles, the junior produced multi-hit efforts against Iowa Wesleyan College, Cornell College and St. Ambrose University.

Defensively, Bauer has stabilized the hot corner, totaling a team-high 53 assists at third. She is pacing the Saints in several statistical offensive categories including batting average (.307), hits (23), RBI (13) and walks (eight) while tying for the team lead in doubles with Nichole Salazar (five).
