Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations and Marketing
“Ashford has helped me grow into a confident young adult.”
Brianna Nichols, 22, was attending Clackamas Community College in Portland, OR when she decided she might be up for a change. “For five years, all I heard about was Ashford University,” says the Clinton campus junior, whose father earned his Bachelor’s degree and Master of Business Administration and mother is earning her second Master’s degree online from the University. Nichols became attracted to the idea of experiencing life on a campus university, particularly one in the Midwest.
Having studied the clarinet for over a decade, Brianna spent most of her life planning to become a music teacher. Upon learning about the different degrees Ashford offered, she felt she would have a wider range of career opportunities if she went in another direction. Now heading into her senior year, she is pursuing a major in Public Relations and Marketing with a minor in Business Administration.
Brianna’s accomplishments thus far include receiving an Honorable Guest award from the Student Government Association. She has gotten work experience under her belt by spending a summer working for a nonprofit organization called Northwest Medical Teams International, and now works for the Clinton campus student work study program at the Student IT Help Desk. She also interns for Visions Wedding and Event Boutique in DeKalb, IL. Additionally, she has participated in several Service Learning projects, through which she recently spent her spring break in Joplin, MN, helping locals with post-tornado damage. “We learned how the mass destruction happened, talked to survivors, and honored those who were lost. We even helped an older couple lay foundation to rebuild their house.”
Although being thousands of miles away from her family is a constant challenge, Brianna uses modern technology like Skype and FaceTime to stay connected. Ultimately, she is happy with her decision to move to Clinton, IA, saying, “I feel the quality of education I am receiving at Ashford is tremendous. I have grown to love and enjoy my classes. I have learned how hard it is to be an adult, and that there are choices in life no one can make for you, not even your parents. Ashford has helped me grow into a confident young adult.”
Despite her newfound independence, Brianna cherishes the connection she shares with her parents at Ashford. “It means the world to me to go to the same school as my parents and receive the same impeccable degree of higher education as they did!”
