Dr. Carl Robinson

Carl Robinson, PhD, is Assistant Professor of English at Ashford University. He received his MA in English from Virginia Tech, and his PhD from Kent State in2004. Of his decision to teach at Ashford, he says it was easy once he met the faculty: "I had never had a job interview where I got the impression that everyone was rooting for me. It made me feel comfortable and want to come to Ashford."
Around campus, Robinson is known for his dedication to his students, and to his personal health and fitness. "I'm pretty fanatical about my exercise routine, so I know just about everybody that comes into the Ashford weight room."
As a teacher, Robinson says "I don't necessarily want teaching to be about memorization. I want my students to connect what they learn in class to their own lives. I want them to find their own meaning." That is the philosophy that he brings to his classroom.
For the future, Robinson hopes to have his dissertation on boxing, wrestling, and what their fans get out of watching. "The Modern Literature of Ring Sport: A Cultural Phenomenon and Its Literary Forms" will be published sometime in 2008.
Finally, when it comes to being part of the Ashford community, Robinson knows he belongs. "The people here always make my day a little nicer. When Mrs. Lowe sees me, she knows that I'm going to ask about her dog, Jonah. When I see Clarke Christian, the subject will invariably turn to music. I could talk to Carole Hlubeck about anything and she would just roll with it, Texas-style. It's the little things about Ashford that make me feel at home."
