National Mentoring Month

National Mentoring Month (NMM) is celebrated in January, and is a direct result of the joint efforts of the Harvard School of Public Health, MENTOR and the Corporation for National and Community Service. The month-long celebration highlights the need for mentors and focuses on ways that each of us in our own personal and professional capacities can work together to increase the number of mentors available for young people. Ashford University is committed to providing accessible learning opportunities to our current and future students. Mentoring is a wonderful way to connect with youth and to open up the endless opportunities that education has to offer.

In education, the role of mentor can be life-changing. Consider the teachers and other people in your life who have helped to guide, direct, and provide insight to you over the years. Whether it's from parents to children, teachers to students, or professional to apprentice, mentorship is often the first step in shaping who we will each become. Ashford University encourages all students to take some time this month to reflect on the importance of mentoring, and to find a way to get involved!

Ten Ways to Get Involved in National Mentoring Month:

  1. Become a mentor
  2. Thank your mentor (Thank Your Mentor Day is January 21, 2010!)
  3. Donate to a local mentoring program / organization
  4. Write a tribute to your mentor at www.whomentoredyou.org
  5. Start a mentoring program in your community
  6. Reconnect with your mentor
  7. Share your mentoring experience with a friend
  8. Read the latest research on mentoring
  9. Volunteer on MLK Day www.mlkday.gov
  10. Tell us about your mentoring experience by sending an email to studentaffairs@ashford.edu.

National Blood Donor Month

January is National Blood Donor Month. During the winter months, January in particular, it is very challenging for blood banks to keep up with the demand placed upon them. Due to holiday schedules, illnesses, and travel, there are traditionally less people donating despite the ever-present need for blood.
Take some time to give the gift of life this year by donating blood. It only takes about an hour of your time, and it is a gift that could last a lifetime.
