Once you have decided to participate in this excursion, contact your Academic Advisor to register for TVL 313 Historical & Literary Explorations of Classical Greco-Roman Culture. Your Academic Advisor can adjust your schedule to work around this opportunity.
Plan ahead; this is a challenging course requiring you to complete regular assignments in addition to travel participation. If you do not need academic credits, you can still participate without earning any credit. Invite a family member or a friend to join the group and enjoy the attractions and culture of Athens and Rome.

Private Group Tours
In Athens:
- Saturday, May 21 – Guided tour of the city: Constitution square (Syntagma) the House of Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the National Library, Herod Atticus Street, Hadrian's Arch, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Visits at the Panathenaic Stadium and at the Parthenon atop the Acropolis.
- Sunday, May 22 – Drive along the coastal road, past the beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, to the most Southern point of Attica, Cape Sounion, where the white marble pillars of the Temple of Poseidon stand. Views of the Saronic Gulf and the little islands offshore, and a walk on the rocky promontory of Sounion.
- Monday, May 23 – Kensington Tour. This is an optional tour to Delphi and will include a tour to the Temple of Apollo, the Delphi Theater, and Stadium ruins. It Includes museum display of two world-known masterpieces: the bronze statue of the Charioteer and the Naxian Sphinx.
In Rome:
- Wednesday, May 25 – Four-hour guided tour of the most famous sites of imperial Rome, including the Capitolium Square, the Roman Forum, the Palatine, Quirinale and Capitolium hills, various ancient monuments, and the Colosseum.
- Thursday, May 26 – Four-hour guided tour of the Vatican City, the centre of Christianity, including the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica.
- Friday, May 27 – Walking tour of monumental Rome, along Via Veneto, through the historical center. Highlights include Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona with the Four Rivers Fountain, Piazza Colonna with the Column of Marcus Aurelius, and the Pantheon.
Course Information
TVL 313 Historical & Literary Explorations of Classical Greco-Roman Culture(3 credits)
This online course explores significant historical developments and selected literary works in the classical Greco-Roman era to identify essential thought that shaped these cultures, and to asses its influence on social, religious, economic and aesthetic trends in contemporary culture. An on-site study tour in Athens and Rome is part of the course.

- Selected readings from works of various Greek and Roman poets and playwrights of the period
- Selected readings representing historical voices and historians' views of the period
Travel Schedule
The study tour comprises eight days, four in each city. This trip will begin and end within a regular 5-week course. The travel schedule will be as follows:
Depart Newark May 19, arrive Athens May 20
Depart Athens and arrive Rome May 24
Depart Rome and return to Newark May 28
