Ashford University Mourns the Death of Board of Trustees Member Dr. Albert K. Karnig

Ashford University today acknowledges the passing of Dr. Albert K. Karnig, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees.  Dr. Karnig passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017. He joined the Ashford board of trustees in 2014 and contributed greatly to Ashford and the financial planning and budgeting and strategic planning committees.

“The Ashford University community mourns the loss of Dr. Karnig and we send our sincere condolences to his wife and children,” said Dr. Craig Swenson, Ashford University’s president. “Since coming to know Dr. Karnig, I have grown to admire and respect him greatly. He was a gifted man and a truly good human being. Dr. Karnig was a valued member of the Ashford board of trustees and will be greatly missed.”

Prior to retirement, Dr. Karnig was the president of California State University, San Bernardino from 1997 to 2012 where he helped the University achieve major milestones in enrollment, diversity of faculty and students, grant and contract funding, fundraising, and international program development. Dr. Karnig also served as provost at the University of Wyoming and associate vice president for Academic Affairs at Arizona State University. Previously, Dr. Karnig directed Arizona State’s School of Public Affairs, which at the time was ranked among the nation’s ten leading public policy and administration programs.

Since retirement, having had a continued passion for education, Dr. Karnig started and led the Infant-Toddler Success organization, which supports the importance of brain development in children at an early age.
