Sigma Nu Tau Honor Society Spotlight
Last year, Ashford University launched a chapter of Sigma Nu Tau, the first and only online chapter and is geared specifically toward entrepreneurship students.
Founded in 2009 at the State University of New York in Plattsburgh, the Sigma Nu Tau Honor Society’s mission is to promote, recognize, and reward academic excellence in entrepreneurship and to encourage and recognize the practice of principled entrepreneurship.
Led by faculty sponsor Dr. Paula Zobisch and faculty secretary Dr. Debra McCoskey-Reisert, the organization is one of eight honor societies for Ashford students. Here, Dr. Zobisch provides more detail about the qualifications for and benefits of joining this new prestigious student organization.
Ashford: What are some of the benefits of joining Sigma Nu Tau?
Zobisch: In addition to a membership certificate, an honor society lapel pin, and a complimentary one-year subscription to Entrepreneur Magazine, benefits include lifelong membership and lifetime recognition for outstanding performance in an extremely challenging field. Members can also apply for the Sigma Nu Tau scholarship and participate in the Sigma Nu Tau Business Video Pitch competition. Moreover, members who participate in Ashford University’s commencement ceremony will be recognized by wearing Sigma Nu Tau honor cords provided by the university. In May 2019, the society recognized a total of five inductees at Ashford’s commencement ceremony.
Ashford: How does participation in Sigma Nu Tau enhance the overall experience for Ashford’s entrepreneurship students in terms of education or potential career opportunities? Why is this honors society a worthwhile endeavor?
Dr. Zobisch: We practice “principled entrepreneurship,” which combines long-term profitability and creates real value in society within a legal, environmental, and socially responsible manner. It would benefit students to be a member of the only nationally recognized entrepreneurship honor society for their resume, for the opportunity to participate in Sigma Nu Tau workshops over various topics relevant to entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, to receive regular communication and keep informed on current issues, and to read Entrepreneur magazine, which has content that stays current within this field.
Ashford: What are the qualifications of Sigma Nu Tau membership?
Zobisch: To qualify for membership, students must be enrolled as of January 1 or July 1 in the Forbes School of Business & Technology’s BA in Entrepreneurship program. Students enrolled in the MBA program with an entrepreneurship specialization prior to July 1, 2019, also are eligible.* Undergraduate students must have 49 or more credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Graduate students must be 50% through their program and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Membership drives run from January 1 to April 1 and July 1 to September 15.
