How You Can Create Change Within Your Organization

There are two truths you have to face when working to create change in business. One, there will be resistance — there always is – by those who are comfortable doing things a certain way because “it’s the way we’ve always done things.” Two, change is necessary. Imagine the company that never innovates, that never challenges its employees to improve a work process or come up with an idea that can top its competition. Change is evolution, and you don’t have to be the manager or CEO to make change happen.

“Change is driven by the individual with the conviction and initiative to see the action through to the finish,” according to Dr. Karen Ivy, an Assistant Professor with the Forbes School of Business® at Ashford University.

Every person in an organization can affect change, she said, if that person:

  1. Clearly communicates his/her ideas for change

  2. States good justification for the change

  3. Can clearly identify the potential benefits to the organization

  4. Works with the appropriate contacts who are positioned to move the change through the organization

Change starts with small steps. Following this example means accepting that change won’t happen overnight, no matter how bad you want it. That doesn’t mean you should lose faith or decide not to try.

Creating change was one of the topics discussed at the 2015 Forbes Women’s Summit in New York City. The event hosted 250 of the world’s brightest and most accomplished women, including executives, entrepreneurs, educators, journalists, celebrities, and politicians.
