Finding a job is difficult for college graduates, and even more so for people without a degree. Research from Georgetown University indicates that by 2018, 63 percent of job openings will require workers with at least some college education. A college education is a must, and one economical path to higher education is through an online university.

Online Education Saves on Tuition

You may be looking at just traditional brick-and-mortar institutions. Did you know the average annual cost of tuition and fees for four-year private nonprofit universities is more than $30,000? An online institution such as Ashford University charges just $14,000 for the same school year. Over the course of four years, that is a difference of more than $60,000.

Online Education Does Not Require Room and Board

Keep in mind that the above difference in expenses does not include the cost of room and board, which averages almost $10,000 per year. Obviously, you will still be spending money on a mortgage payment or rent if you get an online education, but you could save in the long run. The difference is that you determine your housing expenses rather than having them dictated by a university housing department. Why pay $10,000 and battle for a parking space or with a roommate every day, when you can spend less than half the money while studying at home, work, or wherever you want?

Online Education Works on Your Time

School class schedules can be difficult to navigate. You must commute to class (from home or campus), wait until the scheduled start time, head to a different building for another class, and then walk to your dormitory or parked car. If you live off campus and drive to school, there is the additional aggravation of fighting traffic in and out of a crowded area.

Contrast that with the online education experience. Anywhere you have internet access, you can study. You also have the liberty to make your own schedule. This particular advantage is important for people who work full-time. They can more easily find a balance between work and education.

Going to class at an onsite facility requires time spent away from your children and that can mean costly childcare expenses if you need to hire a sitter or send your kids to a childcare center. Students who enroll in an online program can save on babysitting and daycare expenses by setting their schedule so that they can study while the kids are in school, napping, or down for the night. Best of all, the absence of travel time increases the amount of quality time parents can spend with their children.

If you want to protect your future employment interests, you must have a college degree. While there are many brick-and-mortar institutions, a degree from one could cost you more in the end. An online education could be best for your time, your finances, and your family.
