Simon Peyton Jones of Microsoft Research gave a guest lecture in 2013, where he explained his method for writing a research paper. While he’s a computer programmer, not a college student, his advice applies to anyone who struggles with writing assignments. Take a look and get an expert opinions on how to write a research paper.

His seven suggestions are as follows:

  1. Start writing early.
  2. Convey a useful idea.
  3. Tell a story.
  4. Show your contribution.
  5. Relate your work to others’ work.
  6. Put your reader first.
  7. Find readers and listen to them.
