Why You Need Emotional Intelligence to Succeed
Contrary to what many people once believed, IQ is not the sole determinant for one’s success. There are multiple intelligences and skills that influence how we perform in life. One skill that is critical to your success at work is emotional intelligence. When properly understood and embraced, emotional intelligence can change the way you see yourself, change the way you see those around you, and change the way you go about your work.
To understand what emotional intelligence is, you first must understand what it is not. Emotional intelligence is not your IQ, and it is not your personality. Emotional intelligence is your ability to recognize and understand emotions, and your skill at using this awareness to manage yourself and your relationships with others.
In the above video, Dr. Travis Bradberry explains the four core skills that comprise emotional intelligence, how to improve your emotional intelligence with effort, and why this is not a skill that we learn growing up.
