Biography

Dr. Irene F. Stein is the program chair of doctoral research for the College of Doctoral Studies at Ashford University. Since 2009, she served as faculty, research methodologist, and Dean of Doctoral Programs for University of the Rockies before it merged with Ashford in October 2018.

Dr. Stein brings her background as a “life and learning” coach to academics and helps students move through their doctoral journey. She has been working with dissertation students since 2007, helping them to focus, plan, and conduct mostly qualitative research. She has a diverse background, with 20 years in the high-tech industry, and 15 years as a business and dissertation coach. As a qualitative researcher, her research interests focus on understanding how coaching works, how to educate coaches, and how coaching may be applied to an academic setting.

Dr. Stein holds a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate University, an MA in Communication Development from Colorado State University, and an MS in Computer Systems and Applications from Virginia Tech. She continues to be active in the coaching research community and plays golf in Colorado in her spare time.

“A doctoral student is not ‘doing’ a doctoral degree, but is ‘becoming’ a doctor,” she says. “The doctoral journey is transformational in that the graduate is not the same person as when the journey began.”
