Biography

Dr. Jim Castleberry is a lead faculty member in the College of Doctoral Studies at Ashford University. He obtained his PhD from Capella University in Minneapolis, and a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law. He graduated from Staff Judge Advocate General School at the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville, Virginia, received an MS in Sociology from Minnesota State University and a BS in education and psychology from the University of Wisconsin. 

Dr. Castleberry’s legal and professional experience has focused on military, criminal, regulatory, and administrative law. He has held positions in both the public and private sector and worked as a legal officer (JAG) for the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy. He received certification as a mediator from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and additional training in alternative dispute resolution at Drake Law School in Des Moines, Iowa. He has been a mediator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture involving federally insured loans and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In addition, he has provided support with two municipalities to handle civil rights complaints.

For the last two years, Dr. Castleberry has served as Pennington County, South Dakota’s project lead on a grant funded by the MacArthur Foundation titled The Safety and Justice Challenge. Since 2011, he has taught full-time classes in law, sociology, mediation and criminal.
