Biography

Dr. Rhonda Welch-Scalco is the Program Chair for the Bachelor of Arts in Child Development in the College of Education at Ashford University. She earned her Bachelor’s degrees in Child Development and Psychology from California State University, Northridge; her Master’s in Early Childhood Special Education from San Diego State University; and a PhD in Special Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood from the University of California at Riverside. She has lived on the Barona Indian Reservation her entire life and spent ten years working in community health care clinics providing early intervention services, and has also worked closely with Native American Head Start organizations to determine school readiness and provide educational support for families. “My favorite thing about teaching has been helping to shape a student’s academic experience to prepare them for teaching in an early childhood classroom. I am excited to be a part of Ashford’s mission to serve a diverse community.” She advises student to not get behind in their readings. “The information you are responsible for reading builds your knowledge base one educational brick on top of another.”
