Beyond the Workplace - Women’s Rights

National Women’s History Month, observed annually during the month of March, is used as a time to reflect on the tremendous contributions of women in our history and culture. At the same time, it’s an opportunity to celebrate the ongoing efforts of pioneers and advocates for women’s rights. The National Women’s History Project (NWHP), an organization founded in 1980 to broadcast women’s history has identified the 2017 theme of Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business.

Before you check out this month’s video, let’s take a moment to talk about some women’s rights history. Being a woman in the workplace throughout history has been fraught with challenges. Women face sexual harassment, pay inequity, job segregation, and discrimination. While legislation has been written to combat some of these issues, inequities are still common, if not prevalent. As a result, ongoing efforts are taking place across the globe to draw attention to emerging issues faced by women, in the workplace and beyond.


With this in mind, we met up with Liz Wilke, Student Access and Wellness Counselor at Ashford University. Connecting her recent experiences in the Women’s March on Washington to the NWHP 2017 theme, Liz shares her thoughts, “These efforts are a result of shared concerns for the loss of rights that so many women in history have fought for…it was energizing to be surrounded by so many people with similar values who were taking a stand for civil rights.”

In a role at Ashford that is oriented toward student support and ensuring access to education, Liz shares a quote and final thoughts, “’The power of the people is more powerful than the people in power.’ Never think that your voice doesn’t matter.”
