What you will learn

The master’s degree in industrial design and technology prepares you to serve varied audiences in diverse educational contexts in the areas of effective learning analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. With an instructional design curriculum that has been based on the Instructional Designer Competencies developed and validated by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (ibstpi®), the curriculum connects theoretical concepts to real-world applications. You will develop and design learning solutions to address identified needs and problems, tailor coursework to individual design interests, and build a professional instructional design ePortfolio. Upon completion of the Ashford instructional design and technology program, you will be able to:

  • Communicate your designs effectively in visual, oral, and written form
  • Apply research and theory to the discipline of instructional design
  • Update and improve knowledge, skills, and attitudes pertaining to the instructional design process and related fields
  • Apply data collection and analysis skills in instructional design
  • Identify and describe target population and environmental characteristics
  • Select and use analysis techniques for determining and designing instructional content
  • Use an instructional design and development process appropriate for a given project
  • Organize instructional programs and/or products to be designed, developed, and evaluated
  • Design instructional interventions
  • Select or modify existing instructional materials
  • Develop specifications that serve as the basis for media production
  • Plan, design, and evaluate instructional and non-instructional interventions
  • Revise instructional and non-instructional solutions based on data
  • Implement, disseminate, and diffuse instructional and non-instructional interventions
  • Apply business skills to managing the instructional design function
