Dr. Shavonnie Carthens is an Assistant Professor in the College of Business and Professional Studies at Ashford University. She graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctor from the North Carolina Central University School of Law School of Law at North Carolina Central University. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she double majored in English and Public Policy. She is a member in good standing of the Maryland State Bar and District of Columbia Bar. Dr. Carthens has experience in the areas of business law, wills, estate planning, veteran’s benefits law, and real estate settlement law. She taught legal and ethics courses for other universities before joining Ashford’s faculty in 2010. Dr. Carthens believes her professional and educational experiences have taught her the value of bridging the gap between academic philosophy and real-world practice, and says that both are needed to prepare students for the changing global economy. She says, “I love teaching because it allows me to interact with such a diverse group of students and have some part in their forward progress. My favorite thing about working for Ashford is being a part of an organization that is committed to enhancing the learning experience of its students.” She currently resides in North Carolina.
