What is a History Degree?

A history degree prepares students with the research and analytical skills needed to skillfully investigate the past, in order to help prepare for the future. By earning an online history degree, you will be trained to discuss and debate the nature of historical events through the research and interpretation of important primary resources. Learning how to create arguments that are based on evidence, is a critical skill that is taught to students who pursue a degree in history.

What you will learn

Your online bachelor’s degree in history provides a broad curriculum, balanced between both American and World history. Your courses include social studies, explore multiple regions and cultures, and conclude with a research-focused capstone course. Upon completion of your history degree, you will be able to:

  • Utilize appropriate historical sources in the completion of written and/or oral narratives and analysis
  • Interpret events, institutions, and human communities in their historical contexts
  • Assess historical phenomena in terms of continuity, change, causation, and significance
  • Analyze major issues, trends and debates with respect to the historiography of specific topics and themes
  • Evaluate historical events and trends from global perspectives that examine interaction between societies and cultures
  • Assess the significance of social and cultural developments within broader historical contexts

Your Courses in History

Dive into the past, and prepare for your future. Your online history courses explore multiple regions and cultures, and conclude with a research-focused capstone course. History course topics include the American Constitution, women’s history, world civilizations, historical methodologies, decolonization, and globalization. You can also add a specialization to your degree to provide further focus to your studies.

An emphasis provides you with additional opportunities to broaden and enrich your education that is distinct from and enhances your major. It may be taken as a way to expand career options, to prepare for graduate study, or simply to explore in greater depth an area different from your major. Careers in History

No matter what career you choose, the study of history can enhance your understanding of the world. While many history degree holders often pursue a path to becoming a historian, the skills learned during a bachelor’s degree in history can apply to a variety of other careers. You can often times go on to educate others about history as a subject, or offer your expertise to places of historical interest, such as museums, archive centers, and even research centers. For example, if you are looking to pursue a career within a museum, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the employment of museum workers is projected to grow 9 percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations.
