My Ashford | Forbes School of Business & Technology Scholarships
Every year, the Forbes School of Business & Technology™ awards Entrepreneurship and Senior Project Scholarships to select students in recognition of their accomplishments. Past recipients like Michael Barnes and Justen Jones applied the award toward tuition costs while growing businesses. The 2017 Forbes School of Business & Technology Scholarships recipients were no exception—they were grateful, excited, and looking forward to making strides toward their degrees.
2017 Senior Project Scholarship Recipients
The Senior Project Scholarship award is $5,000, which can be split into two equal awards of $2,500 each and applied toward future tuition costs in any Forbes School of Business & Technology master’s degree program. Scholarship recipients Emily Jarvis and Daniel McCleskey share their experiences.
Working toward a master’s degree is a dream come true for me.
Working toward a master’s degree is a dream come true for me. I would never have imagined that I would be here today. I have struggled with depression in my life, and I never thought I would have the grit to succeed. Obtaining such a degree seemed like it was so out of my reach that I just shoved the idea aside. Thanks to excellent mentorship and encouragement, I decided to take the plunge. Finally, I want to be a great example for my son to pursue his dreams.
I realized there was more I wanted to have, be, and do. I always felt an inner sense of importance, capability, and value (thanks, Mom and Dad!), but at some point I realized my responsibilities had weighed me down. As a kid, when I focused on a goal, worked together with my teammates, and practiced to develop my skill, I earned trophies and awards that confirmed my success and let me compete at higher levels. The more fun I had, the more I played, the better my results, the more I could do. As I grew up, the game got bigger. I joined the Air Force. The game got serious. I now play for my country, my wife of 22 years, and our two daughters. When I was “benched” with an injury as an adult in the military, the whole game plan suddenly had to change. I seized the opportunity to use my down time to go back to school. Playing in sports, on teams, gave me the insight I needed to realize where the game (life) went. So my new tryouts are in school application. The workouts are now mental exercises to improve my skills in class. The recognition for my efforts is now in letter grades. The more I do it, the better I get, and the more I am able to do, I compete for better jobs. Now, that’s fun! Maybe it’s not even a new game, but the same old game I’m playing as a whole new me. Thanks, Ashford University!
