Forty-something Noemi Suarez is a single mother of two who has worked as a dental assistant for more than 20 years. Her passion has always been to obtain her degree in Psychology and to work with children. Now a proud alumnae of Ashford, she was still finishing up her degree program when we last spoke to her.
Suarez explains how she discovered the opportunity to complete her degree online through Ashford University: "I looked online to find schools, and I was doing some research." She had even enlisted her friends in finding online schools for her. "Everything I read about Ashford was positive. And then, when an Ashford Admissions Counselor contacted me, he was the most helpful and knowledgeable person. It didn't matter what the question or what time it was, he has always made himself available for me. To be honest, I even cried and he managed to calm me down."
When she was nearing finishing her BA in April 2012 at age 46, she said she planned to move on to her Master's with Ashford. "I love the people; my classmates are so cool. My instructors are really understanding and down-to-earth. And there is so much help for us online students." What kept Suarez so motivated? "I see myself walking across the stage on graduation day and my two children in the audience cheering me on. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment."
When asked if she has been able to apply her schoolwork to her daily life, she assented whole-heartedly. “I have learned how to recognize unhealthy behavior, and I’ve learned to really listen and understand the basic reasons for why people act the way they do.”
In closing, Noemi reflected on her experience at Ashford with gratitude. “My experience as a student at Ashford University has been the most encouraging, educational, enlightening experience of my life. Every instructor I have had has blessed me with a nugget of knowledge that I will forever carry with me."
