I decided that I wanted to leave a legacy for my children and myself.
As a dedicated wife and mother, Theresa Pope spent most of her life looking after her family. But the devastating loss of her special needs son and the blessing of a new granddaughter in 2009 changed Theresa’s perspective. She began thinking about the example she would set for her family and the legacy she would establish.
“I wanted to be an example that no matter what, you can achieve your dream,” Theresa says of her decision to go back to school. “I decided that I wanted to leave a legacy for my children and myself. My family is my strength.”
Theresa began her educational journey by attaining her associate’s degree at a technical college in Albany, Georgia, but found the hybrid class setting—specifically the days in the classroom—to be challenging with such a busy schedule. “Upon completion of my associate’s degree, a voice kept saying ‘go further,’” explains Theresa.
Theresa began her search for the right school by narrowing down options to online schools that would allow her the flexibility to complete course material asynchronously. Theresa notes that her personalized conversations with Ashford enrollment staff were crucial to her final decision to pursue her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration at Ashford’s Forbes School of Business & Technology™.
“When I speak with Ashford staff, I know it is all about me and my situation,” says Theresa of her enrollment and advising experiences. “They are a wonderful group.”
To help pay for her education, Theresa decided to apply for the Entrepreneurship Scholarship that the Forbes School of Business & Technology offers. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate the entrepreneurial spirit by proposing a new business idea. As part of her scholarship application, Theresa submitted a business plan for a new daycare inspired by the unique needs of her late son. The compelling idea helped Theresa receive the scholarship.
“It was a very rewarding challenge and when I was awarded the scholarship, there are no words to explain the feeling that overpowered my heart,” says Theresa.
Theresa completed her degree in 2017 and attended the commencement ceremony in San Diego in May of that year. She takes pride in the fact that she is now a college graduate, an inductee into the Golden Key International Honour Society, and an Administrative Assistant with Conagra Brands. But more importantly, Theresa is also an inspiration to her family.
