You may be eligible for the Ashford Military Grant, which reduces tuition for all undergraduate courses to $250 per credit. In addition, this grant also covers the Sales Tax, Technology Fees, and course materials, including standard shipping costs where applicable, required for an eligible student's program of study and purchased through Ashford University's bookstore or textbook partner.
As an added benefit to both undergraduate and graduate-level students, all required course materials are completely covered for eligible members of the military community, and when ordered through the Ashford bookstore, standard shipping is free.
Eligible students include:
- Active Duty, National Guard, or Reservists
- Spouses of Active Duty, National Guard, and Reservists
- Students using VA Education Benefits
- Department of Defense employees
- Civilian employees of the US Coast Guard
- Veterans Affairs employees
If you are active duty, drilling reservist, or a member of the National Guard, you may be eligible to receive Tuition Assistance (TA). To determine your eligibility for TA, please contact your Education Service Officer (ESO) for details. Note: If you are a Reservist or National Guard personnel, you should also seek any tuition assistance or reimbursement that your respective employers may offer as this could lower your total out-of-pocket expenses.

If you are active duty, pursuing a Master's degree, and are using TA, you may be eligible for Top-Up. Since Tuition Assistance will not cover the complete cost of tuition, you'll appreciate this benefit. Top-Up (the Floyd D. Spence Act) permits the VA to pay the difference between your actual tuition and what Military Tuition Assistance will not cover.
Why am I required to submit a Veterans Benefit letter to your office?
You reported on your FAFSA that you are a veteran, or that you receive veteran education benefits.Although your benefits were not used in the EFC calculation, we do need to count them as a resource when putting together your Financial Aid package. The total of all your resources, including your Financial Aid awards, cannot exceed your Cost of Attendance (COA) at this school.
I am not a US veteran at this time, but will be by the end of the academic year for which I am requesting Financial Aid. I was asked to provide a copy of my DD-214, but I will not receive it until I am officially discharged. What should I do?
You cannot claim that you are a veteran until your status has changed with the military and is reflected by your DD-214.
I no longer have my DD-214. Is there any other form of documentation I can provide?
Your DD-214 is the only acceptable documentation to prove that you qualify as a Veteran of the US Armed Forces. A military ID is not acceptable, because it does not show your discharge status. For a duplicate copy of your DD-214, contact the nearest Veterans Affairs office.
How can I make sure my benefits aren't interrupted?
You are responsible for self-certifying at the end of every month to prove your attendance at Ashford University. If you fail to self-certify, there is a possibility that your benefits will be interrupted. Please contact your Financial Services Advisor to make sure you are aware of your responsibilities to ensure that you continue receiving veteran benefits.
To determine your benefit status, contact a benefits counselor at the Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-888 -GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) or visit http://www.gibill.va.gov/. You have earned these benefits so be sure you use them.
Once your benefit status has been determined, speak to a Military Enrollment Services Advisor to learn how they can best be applied to your education at Ashford University.
The new GI Bill® (Chapter 33) or "Post 9/11 GI Bill," boasts the most comprehensive education benefits package since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. This new benefit went into effect August 1, 2009. If you are eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill and other GI Bill benefits such as the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB), you will at some point be required to make an irrevocable choice of which benefit you wish to receive.
There are many things to consider before choosing which benefit you wish to receive and whether or not to participate in the Active-Duty or Reserve GI Bill programs. Consider these important factors when making your choice: your preferred type of training and the amount of benefits you will get under each benefit.
The Post 9-11 GI Bill will pay eligible individuals a monthly housing allowance (MHA) based on the Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the location of the school.
For those enrolled solely in distance learning the housing allowance payable is equal to ½ the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents, and then is prorated to your percentage of eligibility under Post 9/11 GI Bill and rate of pursuit (1/2 time, 3/4 time, or full-time).
To receive the full Basic Allowance for Housing amount while attending Ashford University you must participate in the Concurrent Enrollment plan under the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
Note: Ashford University encourages everyone currently under Chapter 30 benefits to carefully compare and choose before making the irrevocable decision of switching to Chapter 33.
Ashford University is a proud participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program. The Yellow Ribbon program is a voluntary agreement between Veterans Affairs and the University that allows eligible students (current and newly admitted) to have 100% tuition covered. The Yellow Ribbon benefits include a 50/50 grant between Veterans Affairs and the University to cover any tuition and required fee charges. The grant will be applied after Post-9/11 GI Bill funds, equaling 100% tuition coverage for you. The grant is applicable only during the University's participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.
Grant terms and coverage amounts are subject to change every academic year. Tuition grants will be applied for courses with future starts dates following full authorization status from the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Continuing Yellow Ribbon students will have course materials covered. Any applicable fees not covered by this grant must be paid in accordance with the terms of the selected finance option(s) as stated in the student's enrollment agreement.
Only individuals entitled to the maximum Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit rate (based on service requirements) are eligible for Yellow Ribbon funding. Therefore, you may be eligible if:
- You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001 of at least 36 months;
- You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001; and
- You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran's service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
To qualify for the Yellow Ribbon program, you must:
- Have served 36 months on active duty in the United States military after September 10, 2001 thus making you 100% eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
- Submit an application for the Post-9/11 GI Bill to the Department of Veterans Affairs online at http://www.va.gov and provide a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to your Enrollment Services Advisor.
- Obtain admission to Ashford University.
- Remain enrolled or return as scheduled from an approved break. Should you lose eligibility for not maintaining continuous enrollment, any future grant benefit(s) will be forfeited. Online students must remain enrolled without breaks in attendance greater than 14 days. If you plan to take a break in attendance that is greater than 14 days from your last date of attendance but less than 45 days from the end of the course you last attended, then you must provide a written confirmation of your intent to return. Providing this documentation will ensure that you are not administratively withdrawn or forfeit grant benefits, provided you return as scheduled. Written confirmations must be provided via the Academic Leave Request form (found in the Student Portal) within 14 days of the last date of attendance.
The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) service (also known as the Chapter 31 program) is vested with delivering timely, effective vocational rehabilitation services to veterans with service-connected disabilities. These services enable our injured marines, sailors, airmen, and other veterans with disabilities to make a seamless transition from military service to a successful rehabilitation and on to suitable employment after service to our Nation.
VR&E's primary benefit program is vocational rehabilitation. VR&E also provides educational and vocational counseling to eligible service members, veterans, and veterans' dependents. The outcome of this counseling is assistance in the selection of an educational or vocational goal and/or assistance in the selection of training institutions where this goal may be pursued.

(MyCAA) The My Career Advancement Account Scholarship Program is a workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of financial assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing a license, certification, or Associate’s degree in a portable career field and occupation.

When course materials purchased through the Ashford Bookstore are available in both electronic format and hard copy, students may opt to purchase a hard copy textbook and are only charged the difference in cost and shipping.
